FreeSide recieves Microsoft sponsoring,
switches main servers to Windows
Kingston upon Hull, East Yorkshire, 2006
As of the first day of April 2006, Microsoft will be providing the student project FreeSide, at
the
University of Hull, with funding to buy new servers at a discount from Dell computers, as a sign of support for student efforts at the
university and it's commitment to helping the next generation of IT workers and developers find their way into a career in this fast paced
industry.
The FreeSide administration have been in talks with representatives from Microsoft, with help from the Microsoft Student Partners (MSP's) who often help to produce events and give feedback to the student community, with the hope of being able to continue the FreeSide projects efforts to give free computing resources to students at the University of Hull, without having to rely on small donations and old hardware. We feel that it is only fair that we also ditch our current "alternative" operating system installations and move over to the fine Server 2003 platform offered by our sponsors. We have also been given new "Clippy" mouse mats to give out to the first 20 people who ask for them. Get them while they're hot.
"Now they're Free, and useful." - My mum
"Maybe now they'll stop running their router off a flash card." - David Morris
"LINUX SUCKS" - Pandilex
Any member of the FreeSide admin will be available for comment at our usual e-mail address, which we may answer, unless you're female, hot, and promiscuous, then you can drop by in person.
Freeside is an international conglomerate of spies and pirates convincingly masquerading as geeks. We're long on high-speed internet access and short on daylight.
Email: Unscrewed
Well, when we shifted the freeside.co.uk domain to freeside itself afterIRC was moved over (it previously pointed to Wes's peered IRC server
outside of the university) we forgot that the MX record would change
too.
Unfortunately this means that all email to the admin email address
will have gone to /dev/null since the university are being very stubborn
about incoming email.
If you've emailed us in the last month or so, and not got a response
it's because we messed up - not that we hate you (much).
So, go and resend your emails, we should get them now.
We're all waist deep in dissertation muck at the moment, so things have
been a little quiet round here - but it's nice to see people are using
freeside on an almost daily basis. Things should improve after the 30th,
when we'll finally get round to implementing the suprises we promised a
few weeks back.
Cheers,
